• All concepts found within the content taught are directly tied to the adopted curriculum set forth by the English Department at Sidney Public Schools and aligned to the Montana State English Language Arts Standards - as required by the Office of Public Instruction.

    Semester 1

    Semester 1 will develop and use literary, vocabulary, presentation, and writing skills put to use in a final comprehensive project due during Semester Test week.  This project will be in place of semester tests.

    • Quarter 1

    Reading - focus on thematic and literary concepts found within short stories - written by various authors.  Identify literary components. Students will be introduced to annotations and then required to use those annotating skills on each short story read.  *Major grades will include annotations on all short stories read.

    Writing - focus on building an introductory paragraph and thesis statement.  The driving force to building strong content paragraphs come from the introductory paragraph and thesis.  Students will work to build those skills and develop a paper that has a clear and concise introductory paragraph, a thesis statement, and 2 content paragraphs that incorporate an idea set (introduction, relevance, evidence, and warrant). Students will be required to write in MLA formatted 9th edition.  *Major grades will include no less than three essays and one creative writing piece.

    Vocabulary - focus on content vocabulary words found in context of the short stories read and Greek and Latin Roots.  *Major grades will include vocabulary assessments at the end of each week.

    Speaking, Listening, & Presentations - focus on presenting prepared and collaborated materials to a group of peers.  Memorization is not a requirement per state standards. *Major grades will include a poem reciting and a technology piece (i.e., movie trailer).

    Participation - to be engaged in content and maintaining growth and development, participation in all aspects of class (inside and outside) is required. *Major grades will include continuous reading throughout the quarter - evidence is used from independent projects (requested by the student) and the Renaissance platform. Daily writing requirements will also be used as a portion of the participation grade.

     

    • Quarter 2

    Reading - focus on thematic concepts found within novellas. Identify literary components.  Students will be required to use those annotating skills through the application of notes and forms as they utilize skills learned to build on bigger projects and ideas..  *Major grades will include building a NewsReport from research, and a Peer Interview.

    Writing - focus on building an introductory paragraph and thesis statement with the addition of a concluding paragraph as a synthesis. Students will continue working to build those skills and develop a paper that has a clear and concise introductory paragraph, a thesis statement, and 2 content paragraphs that incorporate an idea set (introduction, relevance, evidence, and warrant), with a final synthesis of the topic.  Students will be required to write in MLA format 9th edition. *Major grades will include no less than two essays.

    Vocabulary - focus on content vocabulary words found in context of the short stories read and Greek and Latin Roots.  *Major grades will include vocabulary assessments at the end of each week.

    Speaking, Listening, & Presentations - focus on presenting prepared and collaborated materials to a group of peers.  Memorization is not a requirement per state standards. *Major grades will include a presentation using technology (i.e., Canva, Slides, movie trailer, or of personal choice within the parameters provided).

    Participation - to be engaged in content and maintaining growth and development, participation in all aspects of class (inside and outside) is required. *Major grades will include continuous reading throughout the quarter - evidence is used from independent projects (requested by the student) and the Renaissance platform. Daily writing requirements will also be used as a portion of the participation grade.

     

    Semester 2

    Semester 2 will require students to utilize a reflective component to assemble a culminating sample of reading and writing skills from two semesters of ELA 9.  This Semester 2 portfolio will be used as the final semester 2 assessment.

    • Quarter 3

    Reading - focus on thematic and literary concepts found within Shakespeare's Works and Poetry (written by various authors). Students will be introduced to annotations and then required to use those annotating skills on each poetry read. Students will engage in research of people and ideas. *Major grades will include annotations on all poems read.

    Writing - focus on building an introductory paragraph and thesis statement with the addition of a concluding paragraph as a synthesis. Students will continue working to build those skills and develop a paper that has a clear and concise introductory paragraph, a thesis statement, and 2 content paragraphs that incorporate an idea set (introduction, relevance, evidence, and warrant), with a final synthesis of the topic. Students will be required to use MLA format in 9th edition. In addition to the development of formal writing, students will begin compiling formal research papers. Students will also be studying poetry forms, structures, and organization.  *Major grades will include two major research papers, no less than 2 essays, and 8 short poems.   

    Vocabulary - focus on content vocabulary words found in context of the short stories read and Greek and Latin Roots.  *Major grades will include vocabulary assessments at the end of each week.

    Speaking, Listening, & Presentations - focus on presenting prepared and collaborated materials to a group of peers.  Memorization is not a requirement per state standards. *Major grades will include collaborative presentations with peers.

    Participation - to be engaged in content and maintaining growth and development, participation in all aspects of class (inside and outside) is required. *Major grades will include continuous reading throughout the quarter - evidence is used from independent projects (requested by the student) and the Renaissance platform. Daily writing requirements will also be used as a portion of the participation grade.

     

    • Quarter 4

    Reading - focus on thematic and literary concepts found in Greek Mythology, Medieval Mythology, and Speeches. Students will begin identifying ethos, pathos, and logos.  Students will be required to use   *Major grades will include notes taken on Medeival Literature and the development and mastery of ethos, pathos, and logos.

    Writing - focus on building an introductory paragraph and thesis statement with the addition of a concluding paragraph as a synthesis. Students will continue working to build those skills and develop a paper that has a clear and concise introductory paragraph, a thesis statement, and 2 content paragraphs that incorporate an idea set (introduction, relevance, evidence, and warrant), with a final synthesis of the topic. Students will be required to use MLA format in 9th edition. In addition to the development of formal writing, students will continue with developing formal research papers. Students will also be studying speech forms, structures, and organization.  *Major grades will include one major research paper, no less than 1 essay, and 1 speech.    

    Vocabulary - focus on content vocabulary words found in context of the short stories read and Greek and Latin Roots.  *Major grades will include vocabulary assessments at the end of each week.

    Speaking, Listening, & Presentations - focus on presenting prepared and collaborated materials to a group of peers.  Memorization is not a requirement per state standards. *Major grades will include a presentation using technology and a formal speech address.

    Participation - to be engaged in content and maintaining growth and development, participation in all aspects of class (inside and outside) is required. *Major grades will include continuous reading throughout the quarter - evidence is used from independent projects (requested by the student) and the Renaissance platform.  Daily writing requirements will also be used as a portion of the participation grade.
